Free Cash Flow

OVERVIEW

Free cash flow (FCF) is the cash remaining after a company pays for operating costs and capital equipment required to run the business. It represents money actually available for dividends, buybacks, debt paydown, or acquisitions.

Note

FCF is derived from the cash flow statement, not the income statement. Unlike net income, it excludes non-cash accounting entries such as depreciation, stock-based compensation add-backs, and deferred tax adjustments.

Tapeboard surfaces FCF data directly on instrument pages and supports FCF-based screening, yield calculations, and DCF model inputs across covered equities.

CORE CONCEPTS

Primary Formula

Component Source
Operating Cash Flow (OCF) Cash flow statement → "Cash from operations"
Capital Expenditures (CapEx) Investing activities → "Purchases of property, plant, and equipment"
FCF = OCF − CapEx Calculated field

Unlevered Free Cash Flow

Used for capital-structure-neutral comparisons across companies with different debt loads:

Unlevered FCF = FCF + Interest Expense × (1 − Tax Rate)

Tip

Use unlevered FCF when comparing companies in the same sector that carry significantly different debt levels. Tapeboard's comparison view applies this adjustment automatically when Normalize for leverage is enabled.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Apple (AAPL) fiscal year 2024, ended September 28, 2024:

Line Item Value
Operating Cash Flow $118.25B
Capital Expenditures $9.45B
Free Cash Flow $108.80B

HOW TO USE

Reading FCF on Tapeboard

  1. Open any covered equity from the search bar or watchlist.
  2. Navigate to the Financials tab.
  3. Select Cash Flow Statement from the statement toggle.
  4. FCF is displayed as a calculated row beneath operating cash flow and CapEx — updated on each earnings release.

FCF-Based Screening

  1. Open Screener from the top navigation.
  2. Under Valuation, add the Free Cash Flow Yield filter.
  3. Set your threshold. FCF yield is calculated as:

FCF Yield = FCF ÷ Market Cap

  4. Apply additional filters (sector, market cap range) and run the screen.

Tip

FCF yield functions as a valuation metric analogous to earnings yield and is particularly useful in capital-intensive industries where net income is distorted by depreciation schedules.

DCF Model Inputs

  1. Open an instrument page and select Model from the toolbar.
  2. Tapeboard pre-populates the trailing FCF figure as the base-year input.
  3. Adjust growth rate assumptions and discount rate to generate present value estimates.

Sustainability Check for Dividends and Buybacks

Navigate to Dividends on any equity page to view the FCF payout ratio alongside the traditional earnings-based payout ratio. A payout ratio exceeding 100% of FCF indicates the distribution may be funded by debt rather than organic cash generation.

Note

Tapeboard flags instruments where the FCF payout ratio exceeds 100% for two or more consecutive quarters with a Coverage Risk indicator on the dividend summary card.

LIMITATIONS

Limitation What to Watch For
Lumpy CapEx A single large investment year can crater FCF without reflecting underlying business deterioration. Review multi-year averages in the Trend view.
No CapEx breakdown FCF does not distinguish maintenance capex from growth capex. Two companies with identical FCF can have very different reinvestment profiles.
Stock-based compensation Heavy equity comp reduces true owner earnings but does not appear in OCF minus CapEx. FCF may be overstated for high-comp businesses.
Balance sheet blind spot Strong FCF does not indicate balance sheet health. A company can generate robust FCF while carrying debt that creates fragility in downturns.

Note

For businesses with volatile or capital-intensive capex cycles, Tapeboard's Normalized FCF toggle applies a three-year rolling average to smooth single-period distortions.
