§17 FOREX_TERMINAL

OVERVIEW

The Forex Terminal is a live grid of currency pairs — seven USD majors, four cross pairs and five EM pairs computed mathematically from the major USD rates, all kept fresh with a live stream during open sessions. Select any pair to load its candle chart, pivot points, and details panel. The FX Drivers strip at the top renders the macro context — DXY, real yields, rate differentials — that explains why the pairs are moving.

What it is

The page seeds the grid with the latest quotes, then streams live ticks during open sessions. The seven majors are fetched together and cross rates are computed as BASE/QUOTE = (BASE/USD) / (QUOTE/USD). The candle chart updates in real time. The chart container renders the active pair at the 1H interval by default.

When to use it

Check DXY context before placing an EUR/USD or GBP/USD swing — the FX Drivers strip and the cross-rates matrix both lean on the dollar's broad strength as the cleanest read. Watch USD/JPY for risk-on / risk-off — yen weakness usually correlates with equity bid. Use the session indicator to time entries — the London-NY overlap (8:00 AM–12:00 PM ET) is when major pairs see peak liquidity and tightest spreads. Cross pairs and EM pairs are useful as relative-value plays — EUR/JPY for the European-vs-Japan rate spread, USD/MXN for risk-on EM carry.

Open it

Path: /forex — Shortcut: none — accessible from the §MARKETS group in the sidebar. Tier-gate: Free sees the seven major USD pairs, candle chart, pivot points, and FX drivers; Pro unlocks cross pairs, the session indicator, the pair details panel, and the full cross-rates matrix; Terminal adds emerging-market pairs.

Note

Cross and EM pair rates are derived from USD major legs. Session high/low on pair cards reflects the price at fetch time, not true session extremes. Use the candle chart for accurate session range on crosses.

Candle Chart

The candle chart updates in real time. During brief data hiccups the chart may reload, but you always see candles for the selected pair. Available history by interval:

Interval History
1m ~7 days
1h ~1 month
1d ~1 year
1w ~5 years

Pivot Points

Classical floor-trader pivots computed from prior-day high, low, and close. R1/R2/R3 are upside resistance levels; S1/S2/S3 are downside support levels. JPY pairs use the JPY-decimal variant.

Cross-Rates Matrix (Pro+)

An N×N grid of every base/quote pair within your tier, color-coded by direction since prior close.

HOW TO USE

  1. Open /forex. The page loads EUR/USD selected by default and starts updating live, refreshing automatically about once a minute plus live streaming ticks.
  2. Read the FX Drivers strip at the top — DXY trend, real-yield differentials, and the rate context that explains broad dollar direction.
  3. Click any pair card in the Major Pairs row to switch the chart and pivot points to that pair. The selected card highlights with a border.
  4. The session indicator (Pro+) shows which FX sessions are open right now: Tokyo, London, New York, Sydney. The London-NY overlap is the high-liquidity window.
  5. Read pivot points beneath the chart — classical floor-trader pivots computed from prior-day high / low / close. R1/R2/R3 are upside levels, S1/S2/S3 the downside set. JPY pairs use the JPY-decimal variant.
  6. The Pair Details panel (Pro+) shows the open, prev close, intraday high / low, and percentage range — useful for breakout / fade context.
  7. The Cross Rates Matrix (Pro+) is an N×N grid of every base/quote pair you have visibility into, with color-coded direction since prior close.
  8. Emerging Markets (Terminal) renders USD/MXN, USD/BRL, USD/ZAR, USD/TRY, USD/CNH — computed from majors via USD pivots.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

There are no keyboard shortcuts assigned to the Forex Terminal. Access the page via /forex or the §MARKETS sidebar group.

LIMITS AND KNOWN BEHAVIORS

  • Refresh cadence: Majors refresh automatically about once a minute plus live streaming updates. Crosses tick when their underlying USD legs tick.
  • Fallback cache: During periods of very heavy load, live quotes may briefly fall back to the last cached values (up to 24h old) until the stream catches up.
  • Weekend liquidity: Forex never closes the way equities do, but liquidity is meaningfully thinner over weekends (Friday 5 PM ET to Sunday 5 PM ET) and during holiday gaps. The Market Closed banner renders during the dead zone.
  • Cross pair high/low: Cross pairs use computed rates, so high/low on the card reflect spot at fetch time, not session extremes. For true session extremes on a cross, use the chart.
  • Candle chart range: History available depends on interval — 1m back ~7 days, 1h back ~1 month, 1d back ~1 year, 1w back ~5 years.
  • Pivot reliability: The FX Drivers strip and Pivot Points compute client-side from the selected pair's spot and prior close — they're descriptive, not predictive. Central bank intervention windows (BoJ, SNB, PBOC) can blow through pivots in seconds. Don't trust S2/R2 as hard floors/ceilings during known intervention zones.

TROUBLESHOOTING

All pair cards show 0 or are stuck on loading

The initial quote load failed (a banner will render) or quotes were briefly rate-limited. Wait 30–60 seconds and reload the page. If the issue persists, check the Tapeboard status page.

Cross pair prices are not updating

Cross rates update only when their underlying USD major legs tick. During low-liquidity periods such as weekends or holiday gaps, ticks may be infrequent.

Chart is blank or reloading repeatedly

Brief data hiccups can trigger a chart reload. The chart recovers automatically. If the candle chart remains blank after a full page reload, the data provider may be experiencing a delay.

Pivot points look wrong for a JPY pair

JPY pairs use the JPY-decimal pivot variant. Ensure you are reading levels in the correct scale (e.g., 155.00, not 1.5500).
