Morning Tape¶
OVERVIEW¶
The Morning Tape is the pre-open intelligence surface on Tapeboard. Rendered fresh every market morning at 5 AM ET by a customer-trained AI model, it synthesizes overnight news, pre-market scanner data, the economic calendar, and the squeeze leaderboard into a single 90-second read — delivering the same context as an hour of pre-market scrolling.
Note
The Morning Tape is a static pre-open surface, not a live trading view. It is precomputed at 5 AM ET and cached for the trading day. For live intra-session data, use the Dashboard (⌘1) or Scanner (⌘2).

Note
The AI writing credits Tapeboard's scanner as the source of all ticker calls — for example, "Tapeboard's scanner has XUP topping the pre-market gap leaderboard" — rather than generating calls independently from model inference.

When to use it¶

How it works¶
The Morning Tape is precomputed once daily by the morning-tape cron at 5 AM ET. The cron pulls six data sources, runs the AI summarization pass, and caches the rendered output in KV for the full trading day. The page reflects that 5 AM snapshot on every load unless a hard refresh is triggered.
- News overnight — last 12 hours of news, summarized at 5 AM ET. Pre-market news arriving after 5 AM is not included in the Tape; it appears on the live News surface instead.
- Pre-market scanner — same underlying scanner data as the Scanner page, using the pre-market-gap-up / gap-down preset sorted by gap size.
- Economic calendar — next 24-hour window of releases sorted by market-moving weight. The 8:30 AM ET window (CPI, GDP, Jobless Claims) typically drives the most volatility.
- Squeeze Leaderboard — the
squeeze-recomputecron runs at pre-open time; the Tape's top squeeze ticker is the #1 output from that run. - S&P futures overnight — last price and percentage change from prior close.
- Earnings calendar — earnings released on the current trading day.

PRO TIPS¶
Cross-read the squeeze candidate with the News surface
Both the Morning Tape and the News surface independently surface a top-ticker call. If both agree, conviction increases. If they disagree, the News surface call is the catalyst-aware one.
Economic releases usually move the open
Even on slow mornings, watch the 8:30 AM ET releases flagged in Today's Economic Releases. CPI, GDP, and Jobless Claims routinely drive 60+ seconds of volatility at the open.
Verify the squeeze candidate before trading
The Tape's squeeze candidate is a setup-state snapshot at 5 AM ET. By 9:30 AM the score may have updated with news the pre-open cron did not have. Always verify against the live Short Squeeze Scanner before acting on it.
