Candlestick Chart

A candlestick chart is a financial chart in which each time period is represented as a single candle encoding four prices: the open, high, low, and close. The rectangular body spans the open-to-close range; thin wicks extend to the period's high and low. A green body signals the close exceeded the open; a red body signals the close was below the open.

HOW IT WORKS

Each candle is built from four data points — open, high, low, close (OHLC). The body top equals the greater of open and close; the body bottom equals the lesser. The upper wick is the distance from the body top to the session high; the lower wick is the distance from the body bottom to the session low. Body size relative to total range measures directional conviction: a body consuming nearly the full range is called a marubozu; a near-zero body is a doji. Multi-candle formations — hammer, bullish engulfing, morning star — are defined entirely in OHLC terms and are only readable on candle charts.

IN TAPEBOARD

Tapeboard uses candlestick charts as the default chart type across all instruments and timeframes. Switch timeframes from the toolbar to layer daily candles for trend context over intraday candles for entry timing. Hover any candle to inspect its exact OHLC values and body-to-range percentage in the data tooltip. Long wicks through key price levels are automatically flagged in the liquidity sweep overlay, surfacing failed breakouts and stop hunts without manual annotation.
