Quadruple Witching

Quadruple witching is the simultaneous expiration of four derivative contract classes — stock index futures, stock index options, single-stock options, and single-stock futures — occurring on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December. The convergence forces traders to close, roll, or exercise large positions on the same day, routinely producing some of the highest-volume sessions of the year. Because U.S. single-stock futures ceased trading in 2020, the day is functionally triple witching, though the original term persists.

HOW IT WORKS

Each contract class follows its own expiration schedule, but four schedules collide on the third Friday of every quarter-end month. Index arbitrage desks unwind hedged positions — typically long stock baskets offset by short futures — driving large buy or sell programs into the cash market at the open, where futures settle to a Special Opening Quotation (SOQ), and again at the close, where expiring options force delta-hedge unwinds. Dealers net short calls above a key strike must buy stock into the close; those net short puts must sell. Quarterly index rebalances frequently coincide, compounding the effect. Closing-auction volume in heavily weighted names can run three to five times a normal Friday, and total U.S. equity volume on witching days frequently exceeds 15–20 billion shares versus a typical 10–11 billion. The flows are mechanical, not directional — any price distortion tends to mean-revert in the sessions that follow.

IN TAPEBOARD

Tapeboard flags each quadruple witching date on the market calendar so execution desks can plan around the elevated volume profile. The order flow heatmap highlights building market-on-close imbalances throughout the session, giving traders a real-time read on whether rebalance pressure is skewing to the buy or sell side. Options traders can filter open interest by strike to identify pinning levels where heavy gamma exposure is likely to anchor the index into expiration. Futures traders monitoring the quarterly roll can track open interest migration from the expiring front-month contract to the next quarter directly in the positions dashboard.
